SSDI/SSI Disability Application Checklist

From Unveiling Unicorns — educational information only. This checklist is not legal advice. For help with your specific case, consult a qualified disability attorney or advocate — most work on contingency (no fee unless you win).

Part 1 — Documents to gather *before* you apply

Part 2 — Filing the application

Part 3 — After you apply

Part 4 — If you are denied (most initial claims are)

Key reminders for invisible & episodic conditions

  • Describe your worst days, and how often they occur — not just your best days.
  • Explain fluctuation: "I can sometimes do X, but afterwards I crash for days" is powerful evidence.
  • Third-party statements (family, friends, coworkers) help document what medical records alone may miss.
  • Keep copies of everything you submit.

For a full walkthrough of the process, see our Applying for Disability Benefits (SSDI/SSI) guide.
